Overview

Cage Gorgon (Gorgon thalamiskos). A sponge-coral hybrid inhabited by cnidarian polyps. Unlike hard corals, lacks limestone structure and photosynthetic microbes — a pure predator. Larva adheres to a partner (such as a Cherimoya Rotsac) and grows around it, eventually anchoring both to the seafloor. The partner attracts prey that the gorgon consumes. The free-swimming larval stage carries genetically distinct host sponge cells, suggesting monogamous relationships with single sponge species. Cutting open the cage gorgon allows access to the symbiotic partner without risk of inflicting pain — it can survive empty or attract a new partner while healing.
