Overview
Curtain Gorgon (Gorgon aulaia). A soft, predatory coral akin to Earth's gorgonians, especially the Venus fan. Merges coral polyps with sponge material — the jellylike inner tissue is indistinguishable from surrounding coral tissue. Forms a long, low-lying fan of tissue that catches prey; an obligate predator unable to photosynthesize, though some specimens host chemotrophic bacteria for supplemental energy. Its skeleton has chemical properties similar to PVC plastic, and serves as an indicator of plankton and small sea life presence.
