Overview

Hecaton Tunic. A complex of animals undergoing competitive sex differentiation, named after mythological hundred-handed giants. Each surface pore functions as a mouth for individual tunicates forming a colonial organism. Develops a flexible semi-hard polyvinyl shell that merges with neighbors' tunics, defending the entire colony. Successful individuals grow larger, achieve sexual maturity, and establish new colony branches. Less successful tunicates shrink and develop teal bioluminescence at branch ends. Lesser tunicates don't produce sperm; instead, a large RNA virus in the seawater carries viral DNA composing most of the organism's genome through retroviral insertion. The fertilization mechanism is scientifically classified as a 'reproductive enigma.'
