Subnautica 2 Lead Location — Where to Find & What It's Used For

What Is Lead?
Lead is a mid-game mineral in Subnautica 2, identifiable as deep purple, cuboid-textured rocks on canyon floors. Small nodes can be picked up by hand; large nodes require the Sonic Resonator to break. Lead's most important early use is crafting the Sonic Resonator itself — which then unlocks the ability to mine all large ore deposits across the map.
Where to Find Lead
Early Game: Canyon NE of Cicada Wreck
Direction: Northeast of Lifepod (compass ~60–75°)
Distance: ~300–340m
Depth: 40–70m (sloped canyon terrain)
Dive down into the canyon near the Cicada Wreck and scan the seafloor and canyon walls for deep purple cuboid rocks. Caution: a Marrowbreach apex predator patrols this area — hug the wreck structure to break its line of sight.
Mid-to-Late Game: Near the Alien Ruins High Density
Once you progress the main story toward the Alien Ruins region, Lead becomes far more abundant. Make this your primary farming location once accessible.
What Lead Is Used For
| Item | Lead Needed | Other Materials | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonic Resonator | × 2 | Basic Battery × 1, Titanium Ingot × 2, Wiring Kit × 1 | Mine large ore nodes and clear Angel Comb infections |
| Sugar of Saturn | × 1 | Salt × 1 | Consumable food item |
| Germanium (Processor) | × 2 | — | Advanced crafting component (also obtainable from Silver) |
🎯 Priority: Use your first batch of Lead to craft the Sonic Resonator. Once you have it, you can mine every large ore node on the map (Silver, Titanium, etc.) and clear infected Angel Combs to unlock Heat Tolerance.
Farming Tips
- Drop a Beacon: Once you find the deposit, place a Beacon (Copper × 1 + Titanium × 1 via Habitat Builder). Toggle the signal from your PDA to navigate back without re-exploring the canyon each time.
- Build a Scanner Station: The Scanner Station base module (Titanium × 3, Wiring Kit × 1, System Chip × 1) tracks all resources within 300m of your base on the map.
- Bring an Air Bladder: At 40–70m depth you'll need multiple dives. An Air Bladder speeds up your ascent and saves oxygen on the way up.
- Avoid the Marrowbreach: Stay close to wreck structures and canyon walls to reduce detection.
- Skip large nodes on your first visit: If you don't have the Sonic Resonator yet, collect only the small hand-pickable nodes, then return after crafting it to clear the large deposits.
