How to Start a Co-Op Session

Method 1: Invite Friends (Same Platform)

  • Select Host Multiplayer from the main menu
  • Choose an existing save or start a new multiplayer game
  • Once in-game, open the Pause Menu → Friends List
  • Click Invite next to your friend's name
  • Your friend accepts the pop-up invite and joins your session

Method 2: Friend Code (Cross-Platform)

  • Go to Join Friends from the main menu
  • Your unique Friend Code is displayed at the top of the screen
  • Share the code with your friend via any messaging app
  • They enter your code to add you as a friend, then use Method 1 to invite each other into sessions

💡 Cross-platform players (PC + Xbox) must exchange Friend Codes first before appearing in each other's Friends List.

Shared vs. Personal Progression

Understanding what's shared and what's personal is essential for effective co-op play.

Category Shared ✅ Personal ❌
Storage Base lockers, fabricators Individual inventory
Tech Blueprints, scan data, databank entries Adaptations (DNA upgrades)
Base Power grid, all base facilities
Oxygen Base life support system Personal oxygen tanks

📌 Key mechanic: When any player scans a creature or discovers a blueprint, the entire team unlocks it instantly. Split up and explore to maximize team-wide progression.

Co-Op Tips

Resources Are Not Scaled for Player Count

The world contains the same amount of resources regardless of how many players are in the session. With 4 players all mining independently, you'll deplete local deposits fast. Assign roles: one player mines, one explores, one builds base infrastructure.

New Players Joining an Existing World

If you join a save that's already in progress, you start with a fresh character — you don't inherit the host's inventory or personal upgrades. Existing players can hand items directly to new joiners to help them get started quickly.

Oxygen Is Personal

There's no air-sharing mechanic — each player manages their own oxygen independently. Make sure your base is designed so every player has easy access to oxygen replenishment, especially in deeper dive zones.

Known Issues & Warnings

  • Desync: Floating items, invisible predators, unresponsive lockers. Fix: guest reconnects; if it persists, host saves, fully closes the game, and re-hosts.
  • Save corruption warning: Never Alt+F4 as the host — it corrupts the multiplayer save and permanently deletes guest inventories. Always quit through the menu.
  • Alt-Tab memory leak: Avoid Alt-Tabbing during biome transitions or you risk a crash.
